ABOUT
AMY SPENCER
I began my writing career in 1996, producing zines and releasing records.
Since then I have become known for my two books, The Crafter Culture
Handbook and DIY: The Rise of Lo-Fi Culture, as well
as working as a consultant and editor for numerous publishers and
writers. I have a BA and MA in English Literature and am currently
researching a PhD in Cultural Studies. My lastest book, a novel called
London Clay, is due to be published in 2011.
For the past five years, I have taught creative writing to people
of all ages and abilities. I have taught literature at Goldsmiths,
London, lectured at several universities, and have run countless workshops
and seminars. Recently, I have developed and lead the Creative Writing
and Creative Development programmes for art + power, an arts organisation
promoting cultural inclusion.
Remaining true to the independent spirit that originally inspired
my writing, I am driven by the potential of building creative communities
and new opportunities to share writing. I am fascinated by how people
read and write stories on the internet and the ways that writing and
publishing are changing.
I launched Bring Yourself in January 2010 as a way to build unique
creative communities, which enable writers to develop their work in
a supportive environment. Using new technologies, the traditional
writing course now has the scope to be interactive and wide reaching.
I am looking forward to welcoming new writers and seeing what we create
together.
I live in Bristol, UK. I enjoy picnics, canoes and getting lost in
the woods.
